In today’s session the day is split into two. This morning I have had an introduction into producing a creative CV. I already have a CV from when i was younger but with the guidance i was given today, I am going to create a new one from scratch. From being given worksheets, there is a list of what i need to include. As a starting point I looked at Pinterest to see what others are doing for their CV’s and there were some really interesting pieces. The common theme with most of them were that they look very professional with matching business cards and covering letters. Tying it all in together brings even more of a professional feel to the potential employer.
From this i’ve now started to put my own together using Pinterest as inspiration and the worksheets as guidance. This needs to be finished as a draft in time for the next session. My personal statement was checked and the tutor liked it so i will use this in my CV. From the session today i have been able to understand the implications of what goes into my Curriculum Vitae and importance of what this document can stand for. Moo is a good website to draw inspiration from as well and could be a good company to refer back to when i want to create my own business cards. I should consider doing this with a covering letter and CV for the hand in for this project.
In preparation for my next session i have created my ‘About Me’ page. It is far from complete but by making a start i can now build on this. My choice of photo was recent work that i thought was appropriate. This is only temporary as i want to have a professional photo taken of myself. But in the meantime i feel this is a good enough representation. Writing about myself was hard. I don’t want to sound too full of myself but at the same time i need to put strong emphasis on the things that i am good at. This is the part that i can build up over time so that it gives me the chance to think about it properly. By looking at the site a bit more i can see that it gives you the chance to give a ‘back history’ and can build a whole log of my work. I think this site is a really good way of getting all my work onto one place online for everyone to see and a good habit for me to get into in terms of getting myself out there and keeping something up to date with my work. It also gives me the choice to link my page with Facebook/Twitter ect. Since i use my twitter for fashion relate work, this will be really useful. I may not link it with my Facebook though as this is more a social thing for me. In preparation for my next session i want to add to my page and develop a bit more of my background.
In our session today we had the opportunity to research different jobs that our course could lead onto. By matching my talents to requirements of jobs, i was able to narrow down to the jobs that could be best suited to my interests. There are so many possible careers that could come from my degree and although i have a general idea that i want to go into a Garment Technologist, there are still so many avenues that i wasn’t aware of. Following this session i want to explore these grey areas so that i can get a better understanding of what is available to me and choose a job title that i can then angle my personal statement and cv towards. By doing this i can also see what skills i may be missing and how i can use my fashion degree to acquire these skill sets. Today i only had the chance to look on DrapersJobs website which had both recruitment agencies and direct employers. There are other websites that i want to have a look at such as: Hudson Walker, Artsthread and GFW. I also want to look at overseas jobs and not be restricted to Europe. A lot of the adverts on Drapers were not suitable for graduate level and majority were looking for someone that already had experience but found one that was the right level of salary for someone coming out of university with the chance to join without any experience. By looking at the ‘must haves’ of the candidate i was able to match some of my own strong talents to those that the recruitment agency were looking for on the application for example: showing knowledge of garment construction and showing the ability to influence and negotiate.
